SNR method
SNR — Single Number Rating method
Simplest method. Use when only the C-weighted noise level (LC) is available. Formula: L'A = LC − SNR.
L'A = LC − SNR
100 − 25 = 75.0 dB(A)
L'A + 4 (HSE recommended) = 79.0 dB(A)
LC is the C-weighted noise level at the workplace. SNR is from the CE marking on the protector. This method is least accurate of the three — use HML or octave-band where possible.
HML — High / Mid / Low frequency method
Requires both A and C-weighted levels. More accurate than SNR. Formula: f = LC − LA; PNR from H, M, L values; L'A = LA − PNR.
f = LC − LA = 97 − 95 = 2.0
f ≥ 2: PNR = M − ((H−M)/4) × (f−2)
PNR = 22.0 dB
L'A = LA − PNR = 95 − 22.0 = 73.0 dB(A)
L'A + 4 (HSE recommended) = 77.0 dB(A)
LC is the C-weighted average level — not LCpeak. LCpeak is typically 20+ dB higher. If only LA is available (no LC measurement), use the SNR method.
Octave-band method
Most accurate method. Requires octave-band noise data and manufacturer attenuation data. APV = mean − (1.00 × SD). The 63 Hz band is optional.
